"CHALLENGE - The undersigned is authorized by the Seneca Indians, of the state of New York, to challenge the Caughnawaga Indians, the champion players of the Dominion of Canada, or any other club in the Dominion, at a friendly game of La Crosse for a bet of from $300 to $500 a side, the losers to be allowed $100 to pay expenses; the game to be played at or near the town of St. Catharines during the month of August. All letters addressed to the undersigned will be promptly attended to. R.A.B. Clench, St. Catharines, July 15, 1869"

"The La Crosse Challenge - The challenge published in these columns by Col. Clench on behalf of the Seneca Indians, offering to play a game of La Crosse with any club in Canada for a purse of from $300 to $500 at or near St. Catharines, $100 to be allowed for expenses, has been accepted by the Prescott Club, to be played on the 12th of August, but the conditions attached to the acceptance are such that Col. Clench feels convinced the Indians will not play. The game is peculiarly an Indian one, but since its adoption by the whites, the rules have been so changed that the Indians contend it is nothing better than base ball, which, in their opinion, is a very effiminate and tame game. The Prescott Club desire the challenge to be played according to the rules of the Toronto Club. For the reasons above given, the Indians say they will not play, but will meet and play a game for either amount mentioned according to the Indian rules. What these rules are, we do not now, but believe the goals are farther apart and that the whole field is the ground, in place of a quarter of a mile distance between goals and a circumscribed space, according to the Toronto rules. Chief Logan, of the Senecas, will meet Col. Clench to-morrow, and then it will be ascertained on what terms they will be willing to play the game."

Note: I couldn't find any record that they ever did agree to the rules or if the game was ever played.
