FOUR SECONDS TO GO
FAVELL’S FIFTH GOAL WINS FOR SUPERTESTS

From The St. Catharines Standard

July, 1966

ST.CATHARINES -- Doug Favell took a long pass from Stan Ignatczyk, broke away from his check and went in to score the winning goal for St. Catharines Supertests at 19:56 of the final period in last night’s Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior A at Haig Bowl.

The goal broke a 12-12 tie and gave St. Catharines the win over Toronto Township in one of the closest games of the season for the local juniors.

Barry Salavara couldn’t catch the speedy Favell and threw his stick in an attempt to deflect the shot but Favell tucked the ball behind Toronto goalie Roger Williams. Salavara drew a game misconduct on the play.

The win was the seventh in the last eight games for Supertests and put them back into sole possession of fourth place, two points ahead of Huntsville. Toronto is third in the league standings.

St. Catharines went into the final period leading 10-9 but PCOs tied it before Supertests went two up. Then goals by Bob Sicinski and Salavara put the teams back on even terms with about four minutes remaining.

Just at the 19:00 minute mark, Dave Landry scored for St. Catharines but the goal was not allowed as he had his foot in the crease when he took the shot.

Sets Stage

That set the stage for Favell’s dramatic rush that netted the lucky 13th goal for St. Catharines. With four seconds remaining the final faceoff was little more than a formality.

Favell was top marksman for the Supertests with five goals. John Swain and Landry counted three each while Ignatczyk and John Hoculik added singles.

Sicincki and Salavara, both St. Catharines junior Black Hawk hockey players, led Toronto Township with five goals and three goals respectively. Mike Marks, Joe Hoare, Brian Wilson and Paul LeGree got one each.

Sicinski, Salavara, Favell and Brian Melville will play in the all-star game in Whitby Sunday. The all-stars, coached by Dave Hall of St. Catharines, will play the Minto Cup Champion Oshawa Green Gaels.

Supertests opened a 6-3 lead in the first period and looked as if they might be well on their way but Toronto came back in the second to hold a 6-4 scoring edge.

Swain’s goal with less than 30 seconds remaining gave St. Catharines a one goal lead going into the final period.

In spite of winning, Supertests had many bad moments in the game. Their tight zone defence was fairly successful at keeping the Toronto Shooters away from the goal, but Supertests were far too slow in going after loose balls in the corners.

Off-Colour Show

A few of the players also showed a lack of hustle in getting back after losing the ball in the Toronto end. Inaccurate passing and shooting by the Toronto players was all that kept them from scoring more often on these fast breaks.

Sicinski scored about the 15:00 minute mark of the final period but the goal was disallowed and he was given a minor penalty for follow through.

There were very few penalties called in the first two periods but more came in the final period. All told there were 53 minutes plus the game misconduct to Salavara.

Jay Thompson of Supertests and Tom Campbell went off with five-minute fighting penalties in the second period. In the third Brian Wilson was given a misconduct for something he said to the referee.

St. Catharines drew 21 minutes in penalties and Toronto Township had 31 plus the game misconduct.

Next game for Supertests will be Wednesday when they play host to Brampton at Haig Bowl at 8:30 p.m.
