ST.CATHARINES -- St.Catharines Athletics taking turns with Brampton Sealtests for first place in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior “A” league the past two weeks, regained top spot last night.

Playing before the largest crowd of the season at Haig Bowl, the Athletics gave up the first goal early in the opening period, then came on strongly to gain a merited 10 – 8 win.

Next start for the Athletics is in Brooklin Saturday night.

Solid Lacrosse

Although there have been perhaps more exciting games played at Haig Bowl over the years, last night’s affair provided some good solid lacrosse.

The passing was accurate, there wasn’t a fluke goal among the 18 scored and both teams used their legs with some tremendous end-to-end breaks. If the calibre of lacrosse can be maintained the capacity of Haig Bowl will be sorely taxed with the next few weeks.

The checking, although rugged, was not as rough as in most games between the A’s and Brampton. One of the few exceptions was Bill Castator who, as well as assisting on four Brampton goals, also drew penalties including a major in a second period fight with Wayne Young. The Brampton player’s three minors were for slashing, an “art” which has had him in trouble since he broke into senior almost 10 years ago.

Referees Gord Hammond and George Burrows issued 46 minutes in penalties, 27 to St. Catharines. The A’s total included a 10 minute misconduct to Doug Smith.

Three for Howe

Ted Howe, now in his 15th season of senior lacrosse, seems to improve with age.

The veteran forward paced the Athletics with three goals and an assist and also hit the goalpost on three occasions. Don Carr counted the first two for the Athletics while Gerry Cheevers also sniped a pair and singles went to Doug Smith, Gary Moore and Pete Berge.

Brampton, playing with only nine men, were led by robust John Spicer’s four goals, Wayne Thompson added three, Bruce Wanless a goal and three assists.

Bob McCready, although not tested as often as Brampton’s John Jefferson, came up with some key stops for the Lever-sponsored Athletics particularly in the third period after the visitors had cut the lead back from 10 – 6 to a narrow two-goal margin.

Defensively Gary Hind made the road to the St. Catharines net a rough one for the Brampton forwards.

Brampton: goal, Jefferson; Madgett, Spicer (4-0), Caruso, Thompson (3-0), Richardson, Bruce Wanless (1-3), Bill Wanless, Castator (0-4).

St. Catharines: goal, McCready; Hind, Smith (1-1), Cheevers (2-0), Brazier, Thorne, McNulty (0-2), Mower (0-1), Young, Kerr, T. Howe (3-1), Carr (2-1), Thomson (0-1), Berge (1-0), Moore (1-2), J. Howe.
