FEW FANS BUT EXCELLENT WIN
MOON LANDING PROVES TOUGH COMPETITION
FOR GOLDEN HAWKS

ST.CATHARINES -- One thing you have to say about St.Catharines Golden Hawks. They just don’t discourage easily.

Since early May they’ve been trying to convince Niagara District sports followers that they have a pretty fair product on display and last night they even tried to attract spectators by combining an “Old Time Hoedown” with lacrosse.

A couple of nights during the early part of their schedule torrential rains helped discourage only the most ardent fans from attending. On two or three other occasions when they did get a reasonable number of people in the building they came up with something less than their best lacrosse.

Sunday night even the dual attraction of pro lacrosse and a hoedown wasn’t enough to drag people from the television sets as they stayed home to watch the miracle of man’s first landing on the moon.

Not only was the attendance the smallest of the season but several members of the Kitchener Nationals also chose the lunar landing over lacrosse, leaving the visitors with only four substitutes.

And in all honesty, no one could have blamed either the spectators or the players from sitting out the Sunday game. There are 36 games in the Eastern Lacrosse Association schedule. How often in our lifetimes will an event of equal importance to the astronaut’s trip take place?

Good Effort

However the few who did prove their loyalty by sitting in the humid Garden City Arena were well rewarded.

The Golden Hawks turned in one of their most competent team efforts of the season, establishing a 9-0 lead in the first period, boosting the margin to 15-2 in the second then splitting eight goals evenly in the third period.

Veteran Ted Howe was the top sniper for the Hawks with four goals. Doug Favell and Gary Moore each contributed three goals and an assist, Moore scoring all his in the third period.

Terry Davis and Ron Roy added two each to the St. Catharines total, John Hoculik, Joe Hore, Dave Landry, Gord Keates and John Roberts had one each and hard-working Jim Richardson drew three assists.

Grant Heffernan figured in four of six Kitchener goals, with two counters and assists on two others. Ron Liscombe also scored twice, Bob Hanna and Paul Henderson once.

Both teams used two goaltenders, Joe Tomchyshyn starting for the Nationals, and then giving way to Russ Dunn, while Bob McCready assisted on three goals during his two periods, before being replaced by Gary Vanshagen.

Both Hawk goalies played exceptionally well and McCready, late in the third period, made a brief appearance as a forward. However he drew a slashing penalty thus nullifying his efforts to score.

The Hawks are in Toronto Thursday, then meet Peterborough Lakers here Friday night.
