Haig Bowl Opening Night
LOOKING OVER LACROSSE WITH LOU

ST.CATHARINES -- Doc Morris and his Seneca braves will help the Hope-Daley Athletics pry the lid off senior lacrosse here tonight for the first time in five years, despite the fact that the Yankees would like to drop out of the international circuit during the first half of the schedule.

The highly enthusiastic doctor planned to stay on the American side of the border this evening until Gene Dopp, O.A.L.A. secretary in “straight from the shoulder” language advised the Rochester boss to have his all-star native (tc edit) crew ready to go tonight as soon as the district celebrities get through dedicating the new box at the city sports park.

Gene told Morris that it was possible that he might have his connections with Canadian sports severed if he failed to have his team appear for the grand opening tonight and the doctor, being the smart gentleman he is, said not to worry he’d be here and that the Athletics would realize that by looking at the score sheet, when the game was completed.

Now Billy Hope didn’t mind the genial doc saying he’d have his team here, but that last crack rekindled the sparks of the fire still smoldering from the 14 – 3 defeat the Senecas handed our Athletics at Rochester and so Billy gave his protégés another pep talk entitled “vengeance”.

A week ago “Hopey” borrowed several car tickets from somewhere and took his lacrossists down to Lakeside Park to watch Rochester and Port Dalhousie do battle. The Amerks registered a win, but it would be more appropriate to say they outscored the Ports in anything but an important performance for such a highly classed all-star team.

After watching the game, Billy called a huddle of his boys and as the moonlight fell across the then deserted stands and the lake-cooled breezes sighed through the trees, the Athletics master-mind developed into pep talk number 30 bearing the title “In our own backyard” in which the speaker pointed out you may be “cock o’ the walk” in your own cushion, but you’re just another bird (and frequently the target for a bird) on someone else’s.

The moral to that according to the Athletics coach is that Rochester won’t be so doughty on the St.Catharines box this evening when all roads will lead to the city sport park at Thomas Street at 7 o’clock. Come early and avoid the rush.
