ST.CATHARINES -- St.Catharines Golden Hawks beaten by Kitchener Nationals in overtime Sunday afternoon, came back with a decisive 19-12 victory over the Kitchener club here last night.
The win moved the Hawks back into a third place tie with Kitchener in the four-team Eastern Pro Lacrosse League, two points behind Toronto Maple Leafs and four back of Peterborough Lakers. The Hawks have two wins and four defeats. Kitchener is two and three.
The Hawks will have little time to rest on their laurels. They play in Peterborough tonight and are at home to Toronto Sunday evening.
For the first time this season playing-coach Ken Crawford remained in civies and devoted his active efforts to coaching. The move apparently paid off as the Hawks played by far their best game since trouncing Toronto. Their passing was more accurate then in the first five starts, they broke quickly and turned in a far more impressive effort defensively.
St. Catharines established a 4-1 lead midway in the first period but Kitchener came back strongly to cut the margin to 5-4 at the intermission, then led briefly with two quick goals early in the second.
The rest of the way the Hawks were seldom in trouble, holding a 10-6 edge going into the final period, then firing nine goals in the final 20 minutes while holding the visitors to four.
Terry Davis was again the points leader with three goals and three assists. Doug Favell also scored three and picked up two assists while Ted Howe, Brian Thomson, Dave Laundry and Gary Moore had a pair. Singles went to Wayne Thompson, Jim Richardson, John Hoculik, Joe Howe and Bob McCready.
Jim Moore has a three-goal night for Kitchener. Frank Marchiori, Grant Heffernan two each, John Dale, John McKenna, Ken Richardson, Bill Morrison, Joe Krasnaj and John Fisher one apiece.
As usual the antics of Bob McCready presented the disappointingly small crowd (just under 500 paid) with some hilarious moments. McCready is listed as the Hawk goaltender but treats that position as strictly a part-time occupation.
On one of his many dashes down the floor, he took Howe’s pass late in the first period, moved to within 15 feet of the Kitchener net and fired a high, hard shot past goaltender George Stephens.
McCready also assisted on three St. Catharines goals, picked up a penalty for slashing, handed out a half dozen crushing checks, intercepted several long Kitchener passes and had himself a thoroughly enjoyable night. When not engaged otherwise, he also came up with 47 stops on 59 Kitchener shots.
If the game of pro lacrosse is to be sold in St.Catharines, McCready
will be its No. 1 salesman.
