ST.CATHARINES -- St.Catharines Golden Hawks, recovering completely from their case of opening game jitters Sunday, defeated Toronto Maple Leafs 18-14 at Garden City Arena last night and were impressive in the process.
From goal out the Hawks looked like a completely different club than the one which suffered an 18-6 trouncing at the hands of Peterborough two evenings earlier.
Bob McCready not only returned to his usual solid style of goaltending, but also sparked several floor-length dashes, threw long passes for four goals and cuffed every Toronto player who ventured within range of his crease.
The defence, while still not the strongest part of the team, at least played adequately. However the major difference was on offence.
Terry Davis, the short, slim and elusive forward, didn’t have a dangerous shot on goal against the Petes. Last night he cut the Toronto defence to ribbons, fired five goals past starting guardian Porky Russell and his replacement (after the first period) Roger Williams and also picked up a pair of assists.
Doug Favell and Gord Keates were right behind in points with four goals and two assists each while veteran Ted Howe and Jim Richardson had two each, playing coach Ken Crawford one.
Jack Madgett was easily the most dangerous Toronto attacker with five goals and four assists. Ron MacNeill picked up three goals, Ross Othen two, Ken Winzoski, Bob Sicinski, Jan Popiel and Wayne Copeland singles.
Popiel and Sicinski are former St. Catharines junior A hockey players,
The Hawks established their superiority early in the game. In the first four minutes McCready looped floor-length passes to Davis for two goals. Davis then set up Favell for a third and St. Catharines was headed for it’s first victory in professional lacrosse.
They led 7-2 in the first period, 11-6 in the second and moved ahead 13-6 early in the third.
The Leafs made the most determined bid to overtake the Hawks between the five-minute and nine-minute marks of the final period. The fired five consecutive goals past McCready as his defence suffered a letdown cutting the margin back to three goals.
However urged on by enthusiastic “Go Hawks Go” chants from the crowd of just under 700, The Hawks recovered on goals by Richardson and Davis to snuff the rally.
The result left the Leafs and Hawks tied in second place, two points behind Peterborough in the four-team Eastern Pro Lacrosse Association standings.
The Petes are unbeaten in two games while Toronto edged Kitchener 12-11 in overtime in their only previous start.
The Hawks are in Toronto Thursday in a game which will be carried on Channel 11 starting at 8 o’clock.
Their next home game is one week from tonight with Kitchener.
