The Suffield High School Lacrosse Team is planning a bus trip to western New York to play teams from the three Seneca Nation Territories, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Tonawanda. The trip is scheduled from March 22nd through March 25th, 2007. The tournament will be held at the Gilbert Lay Arena, Cattaraugus Seneca Nation Territory, Irving, NY. Three games are scheduled: one on Friday evening (3/23/07) at 7:00 PM; and two on Saturday (3/24/07), one at 1:00 PM and the second at 6:00 PM.
Deh Wa E:O (lacrosse in Seneca) is the oldest sport in North America developed by the Haudenosaunee, known as Iroquois, as both a means of training for war and as a ³medicine game² for decisions regarding the confederacy of five (Iroquois) nations. The medicine game evolved as a method of relieving the stress of a stalemate regarding a requirement for a unanimous decision of their pure democracy (similar to that of the ancient Greeks) of the Haudenosaunee form of government. This highly advanced form of government was the basis of the constitution of the United States. The ³Great Peace² of the Haudenosaunee extended from the Hudson Bay (Canada) to the Carolinas, and from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. Ben Franklin referred to the Iroquois as ³the Romans of the New World² because of their highly developed government and great strength.
The cultural experience will be excellent for the Suffield players including Iroquois dancers and singers performing at the Saturday evening game. A tour of the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum in Salamanca, NY is also planned during the trip. The Seneca Nation Recreation Department under the direction of Ms. Eagle Parker-John is providing referees, staff at the arena, media coverage and a meal for the Suffield team. Rodney Haring, a veteran player for the Pinewoods Smoke Lacrosse Team (Can-Am Box Team), has also provided valuable assistance in developing this event. The Suffield team will be staying at the new Seneca Niagara Falls (NY) Casino Hotel.
Donations for this cultural/educational/sports experience would be greatly appreciated. Please send your donations in care of the Suffield High School Lacrosse Team, Suffield High School, 1060 Sheldon Street, West Suffield, CT 06093.

TONAWANDA
On Saturday, February 24, 2007, a social was held at the Tonawanda Community Hall to raise funds to help Gary Sundown and his family build a home and replace all their poseessions lost in a fire that totally destroyed their home and it's contents.
As part of the fund raising, a 'Chinese Auction' was held. The Tonawanda Braves donated a jersey, which Snooky won, and was persuaded to wear.
The Can-Am Lacrosse Association made a sizeable donation, as did several of the teams and executive.
Gary Sundown was among the prime movers who established the Tonawanda Braves Sr. B Lacrosse Club in 1999. He continued to help operate and play for the team until the end of 2004.
Two years ago, he decided to concentrate on Tonawanda Braves Minor Lacrosse system which was established in 2004.
Gary also donates his time to minor basketball and other sports in the community.
The fund raising social was awesome.
Our MC was Sheldon Sundown.

It started about noon. I arived at 1:00pm and stayed until 7:30pm.
Tonawanda is a community of about 700 people. I'm sure most were there at least twice, dropping a donation in the box each time. There was also a good representation of people from other communites, including most of the Can-Am Sr. B Executives.
The Ladies of the community had a nice lunch ready for us which stayed in place until late afternoon when the supper supplies arrived. The donations box was located at the beginning of the table. Ironically, the box was the shape of a house and the slot to drop your donations in was the chimney.
Shortly after 4:00pm we were treated to listen to severla groups of traditional Social Native singers from Six Nations, Oneida(Thamesford, ON.), Newtown, Tonawanda, and others.
Traditional Native singing is much different than what we hear on the radio. It's all instrumentals, with the voices being the instruments. All very lively, melodius and happy sounding.
Then there was dancing, but not the ballroom variety. It's more like a conga paced by traditional Native singing. Toddlers to seniors participated. Some of the Social dancing included a fund raising event. We could pay for numbered paper plates which were placed on the floor inside the dancing circle, when the singing/dancing stopped, the youngsters dove into get a plate which could win a prize if the numbers drawn matched your plate.
One liitle tyke saw me taking pictures and indicated that he thought I should take one of his little blue friend. I don't know his name, but here's the photo that ensued.

When all was said and done, it was a great event to help and honor a fine family.

The Rochester Knighthawks scored five short-handed goals in the first quarter against Portland on Saturday, including a pair by Mike Accursi.
The Colorado Mammoth recorded two wins in Week Eight to improve to 8-1 on the season. The 8-1 start is the best start by any team since Buffalo began the 2003 season 9-1. On Thursday the Mammoth defeated the Portland LumberJax 10-8 and then returned home on Sunday, where they avenged their only loss of the season with a 15-12 victory over the Calgary Roughnecks.
46-year old emergency goaltender Dwight Maetche saw his first action of the season for Portland on Thursday. Maetche, who was dressed for only his second game of the season, came in six minutes into the first quarter after a shot to the facemask shook up Dallas Eliuk. Maetche held Colorado to only two goals in the next 30 minutes, finishing with 36 saves and 8 goals against.
Last week's trade between Portland and Minnesota appears to have worked out for both clubs. Kelly Hall, who was acquired by Portland in the deal, led the LumberJax offense with six goals in two games this weekend, though Portland lost both contests. Mike Hominuck also lead his new team with seven goals and five assists in two Minnesota victories over New York the weekend.
In Colorado's victory over Calgary on Sunday, the game was tied on nine different occassions. The two teams were neck and neck the entire game, until Colorado pulled ahead in the fourth quarter with three straight goals. The fourth-quarter run turned a 12-11 nailbiter into a comfortable 15-11 lead, and the Mammoth were able to run out the clock and hang on for the victory.
The Rochester Knighthawks continue to pace the East Division with a 6-2 record. Rochester improved their record with an 18-12 victory over the Portland LumberJax on Saturday. During the contest the Knighthawks scored five short handed goals in the first quarter and seven during the game.
The Knighthawks scored four of their first quarter short-handed markers while Scott Ditzell was serving a five-minute major for high sticking.
"I was kind of laughing because I felt like I was in the box forever; we just kept scoring goals," Ditzell told Sal Maiorana the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "I was thinking that was a good place for me right now. I've never seen that, but I thought it was great."
In the Hall of Fame Game on Saturday night, Philadelphia Wings rookie Geoff Snider went a perfect 16 for 16 in the face-off circle and veteran Peter Jacobs went 6 for 7. Despite the team winning a combined 22 of 23 face-offs, the Wings still lost 12-8 to the Buffalo Bandits. Wings goaltender Matt Roik suffered his first loss of the season. Bandits veteran John Tavares scored three goals in the game, bringing his career total to 570 regular season goals. Tavares trails Gary Gait (596) by 26 for the all-time record.
New York Titans Head Coach Adam Mueller dropped a weekend series against his former team, the Minnesota Swarm this weekend. Mueller's Titans lost 15-14 to the Swarm at Madison Square Garden on Saturday and 17-14 at Xcel Energy Center on Sunday. Titans forwards Ryan Boyle and Casey Powell combined for 13 goals in the two games, but the Titans dropped their fourth and fifth consecutive games. The Swarm have now won three in a row, improving to over .500 for the first time this season at 4-3.
The Arizona Sting defeated the Edmonton Rush, 12-11, at Jobing.com Arena on Sunday afternoon. Dan Dawson scored three goals, including the game-winner three minutes into overtime to clinch the victory. With the victory, Arizona improves to 5-2, the Rush fell to 2-4.
The Toronto Rock defeated the Chicago Shamrox, 11-10, in front of 15,200 fans at Air Canada Centre on Sunday afternoon. The Shamrox held an 8-4 haltime advantage, but the Rock held Chicago scoreless for the entire third quarter as they rattled off five consecutive goals to take their first lead of the game. Aaron Wilson, who scored a natural hat-trick in the run, finished with four goals to lead the Rock.

The 2007 Hall of Fame Game takes place on Saturday, February 17th, as the Philadelphia Wings host the Buffalo Bandits at Wachovia Center at 7:30PM. Considering the professional lacrosse backgrounds of the four men being honored, it's fitting that the Hall of Fame Game is a regular season matchup between these longtime Eastern Division rivals.
The Class of 2007 will be the second group to be inducted or recognized by the Hall of Fame.
Tom Marechek, Philadelphia Wings
Tom Marechek played twelve seasons (1994-2005) in the league, all with the Wings. Marechek retired at the end of the 2005 season as the league's third all-time leading scorer with 773 points on 399 goals and 374 assists. Marechek added 69 post season points on 23 goals and 46 assists and led the Wings to four championships during his career. The Wings retired Marechek's #42 on February 18, 2006, making him only the third NLL player in history to have his jersey number retired. Marechek earned eight All-Pro selections in his twelve seasons. He was named First Team All-Pro five times (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001) and Second Team All-Pro three times (1995, 1998, 2003). Marechek was the sixth overall pick of the 1992 Entry Draft.
Darris Kilgour, Buffalo Bandits
Darris Kilgour was the first player ever drafted by the Buffalo Bandits, selected in 1991. He played nine seasons (1992-2000) in the league, eight of which he played for the Bandits. Kilgour scored 312 points on 144 goals and 168 assists. He added 61 post season points on 26 goals and 35 assists, and played on all three of Buffalo's championship teams (1992, 1993, 1996), including the only team to go undefeated in league history (1993 Bandits, 10-0). Kilgour was named First Team All-Pro in 1998 and Second Team All-Pro twice during his career (1992, 1997). Following retirement from his playing career after the 2000 season, Kilgour has made the transition from winning player to winning head coach. From 2001 to the present, Kilgour has coached his teams in to the playoffs in all six of his seasons behind the bench. Afer a pair of seasons in Washington, Kilgour returned home to coach the Bandits in 2003. In those four seasons, the Bandits have a 42-22 regular season record and two appearances in the championship game. Kilgour has quickly risen to fourth on the league's all-time coaching wins list with 66.
Mike French, Philadelphia Wings
Mike French started with Philadelphia Wings as a player in 1987. He has been with the organization through each of its 20 seasons, serving as a player, coach, general manager and his current position as Executive Vice President and Co-Owner. As a player, French led the league in goals during the league's inaugural season, scoring 14 goals in 1987 (six-game regular season). French went from player to General Manager in 1988, and presided over the start of the Wings dynasty. In his seven seasons as GM, Philadelphia went 33-17 in the regular season and 7-2 in the postseason, winning three championships (1989, 1990 & 1994). His duties with the team included a brief coaching stint in 1994, and a role as team advisor. Equally successful as a businessman, French ascended to the position of Co-Owner and Executive VP of the team in 1998, the first and only player in league history to own a significant piece of a league franchise.
As a leading team executive for the past nine years, French has served the league in several prominent roles, including as Chairman of the Expansion Committee. Since 2000, the league has expanded from eight to thirteen teams, and franchise values have increased dramatically. In addition to his league accomplishments, French was a three time All-American and College Player of the Year at Cornell University. He also served as captain of the Canadian national team during its first world championship in 1978. French is currently is the only member of both the Canadian and US Lacrosse Halls of Fame.
Tom Borrelli, The Buffalo News
Tom Borrelli is the first member of the media to be recognized by the NLL Hall of Fame. Borrelli is the most experienced member of the league's media, having covered the league since the debut of the Buffalo Bandits in 1992. No journalist has covered as many league games as Borrelli, who has covered the Bandits and the league for the Buffalo News for the past fifteen seasons. In addition to being a solid beat writer, Borrelli has a genuine love of the game that shows in his writing. He often volunteers his own time to travel to and report on league games that are outside of normal responsibilities at the News. Borrelli possesses a wealth of league knowledge, often assisting league and team media relations departments in the research and confirmation of historical league stats. He also writes about the NLL for Lacrosse magazine, the official publication for US Lacrosse. In 2005, the league first recognized Borrelli's contributions to the league by naming its new annual award for Writer of the Year as "The Tom Borrelli Award".

John Tavares scored four goals against Chicago on Sunday, leading Buffalo to their first road win of the season.
The Calgary Roughnecks and Philadelphia Wings met up at Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary on Saturday, and the Wings made the most of their first ever trip to Calgary, coming away with a 10-7 victory. Wings goalie Matt Roik recorded 43 saves and held the Roughnecks scoreless for more than 34 minutes. The streak began early in the second quarter and continued into the fourth. Roik currently owns a league best goals-against-average of 8.85 and a league best 79.8% saves percentage.
It was only the fifth time in franchise history the Roughnecks failed to score more than seven goals. Forward Kyle Goundrey was out with flu-like symptoms, missing only his fifth game in Roughnecks franchise history. Forward Kaleb Toth, who scored a goal and assisted on another, also was reported to be suffering from flu-like symptoms.
Philadelphia gave the Roughnecks nine minutes of man-advantage time in the third quarter alone in Saturday's tilt but didn't allow a single goal.
The Edmonton Rush captured their second win of the season on Saturday, an 11-9 victory over the Arizona Sting at Rexall Place. It was Arizona's first road loss of the season. After starting goaltender Pat Campbell allowed four goals on four shots in the first quarter, the Rush replaced him with Curtis Palidwor, who was acquired by the club from New York just a day earlier.
Palidwor was strong in his Rush debut, stopping 42 of 47 shots he faced and capturing the win.
"This hasn't exactly been a storybook start to my season," Campbell told the Edmonton Sun after being pulled in the first quarter. "Thankfully the team is back on track. I'll contribute any way I can from here on in to see the season through to get to the playoffs. And if that means holding a water bottle and opening and closing the gate, you're looking at the best in the league."
Rush Head Coach and General Manager Paul Day however gave Campbell some reassurance. "Paddy will bounce back," he told the Edmonton Sun. "We're pretty lucky to have two goalies that have two totally opposite styles. I think whoever's hot is going to be going. I think they both recognize that."
Sting forward Derek Malawsky became the 14th member of the National Lacrosse League's 500-Point Club, scoring his 500th career point on a goal just 20 seconds into the game.
Veteran John Tavares lead the Buffalo Bandits to their first road victory of the season on Sunday, a 12-11 victory over the Chicago Shamrox at Sears Centre. It was their first win in four tries away from HSBC Arena this season and also snapped a franchise record-tying, four-game road losing streak that included last year's regular-season finale.
Tavares scored four goals and added three assists in the win and is currently second in the league with 44 points (18 goals, 26 assists) this season.
"He's a Hall of Fame player," Chicago's Chris Panos told Michael Eakin of the Daily Herald. "Everything goes through him; he's the catalyst. We couldn't contain him tonight."
Buffalo also took advantage of Shamrox penalties in the contest, going 5-for-5 in power plays, while limiting Chicago to just two such scores on seven tries on Sunday. Last week Buffalo allowed a dozen power-play goals in back-to-back losses to Toronto.
Rookie Brendon Thenhaus, who was the Bandits' third-round pick in the entry draft, made his first career appearance and was credited with an assist and three loose balls.

As the National Lacrosse League approaches the halfway mark of the regular season, teams are looking at trades to shore up their playoff runs. Two members of the Brooklin Redmen were involved in recent transactions.
Mike Hominuck, who was the leading point getter for his Portland Lumberjax, makes the move east as he was traded to the Minnesota Swarm. The Lumberjax get forward Kelly Hall in return; Hall leaves the Swarm as their leading goal scorer.
Andrew Burkholder leaves the defending champion Colorado Mammoth for the sunny skies of California as a member of the San Jose Stealth. In return, the Mammoth obtained defender Jim Moss. In addition to Burkholder, the deal also cost the Mammoth a first round selection in the 2007 draft.

DURHAM -- The Oshawa Lady Blue Knights continue to churn out elite level athletes and help provide them with opportunities well beyond Durham's borders.
Melissa Nakasuji of Ajax is the latest to sign on with an American university, earning a lacrosse scholarship with the Limestone Saints, a Division 2 NCAA university in South Carolina.
She is another great example of a player who came through the stepping stones of the Blue Knights program, starting out at the house league level and advancing to the developmental U19B squad before making the competitive U19A team.
Nakasuji is a defender who is often used as a midfielder because of her good fitness level, reliable stick and a good transition game.
"Melissa is a player who has worked hard for everything she has earned," says Barb Boyes, founder of the Lady Blue Knights. "She is a product of having a strong belief in herself and her ability, along with a determined attitude. That combined with positive parental support and guidance have helped this young lady develop into a very fine lacrosse player."
Nakasuji was part of the Blue Knights team that won a Provincial and Ontario Summer Games Championship last summer.
She made the trip to Australia recently hoping to be part of the Canadian team that will compete at the World Under-19 Championships in Peterborough, but was a late cut.
That disappointment will surely dissipate when the exciting new opportunity presents itself in the fall.
"We are very excited to have Melissa commit to Limestone," says Limestone coach Scott Tucker. "We set out this year to find outstanding defenders to come in and make an immediate impact next fall. By getting Melissa's commitment we have done that"

Josh Sanderson scored 11 points on six goals and five assists for the Rock in two wins over the Buffalo Bandits this weekend.
The Toronto Rock captured their first two victories of the season with a weekend sweep of the Buffalo Bandits in Week Six. Rock captain Jim Veltman returned to action on Saturday night after missing three games with a hamstring injury. Veltman scored a goal and assisted on three others for four points and collected 12 loose balls in Toronto's win on Saturday. The veteran has lead the league in loose balls every season he has played, but after missing three games this season he currently has only 19 loose balls, far off the pace of league-leaders Steve Toll (86) and Brodie Merrill (83).
The Bandits, who won the East Division with an 11-5 record last season, have fallen to 2-4.
"We gave up the lead with absolutely selfish penalties over and over in the fourth quarter and we deserved every one of them. This weekend was absolutely unacceptable. I'm disgusted with my team right now," Bandits Head Coach Darris Kilgour told Tom Borrelli of the Buffalo news.
The Bandits gave up six power play goals in each of their losses this weekend and took 14 penalties for 52 minutes, which resulted in 10 extra-man opportunities for the Rock on Saturday
After the 0-3 start for Toronto, Head Coach Glenn Clark appears to have his club buying into his system.
"We're adapting to the systems that Glenn has been implementing," Rock defenseman Dan Ladouceur told the Canadian Press. "We're seeing results now."
"We've got a lot of new players and what Glenn tried to institute from the start, we're finally getting."
The Rochester Knighthawks took command of the East Division with a 13-8 win over the Chicago Shamrox in Week Six. Rochester scored six power play goals in the contest, including three consecutive extra attacker goals by forward Scott Evans in the first quarter. Shawn Williams added a fourth consecutive power-play goal for the Knighthawks in the opening frame as Rochester took a 5-2 advantage into the first break, a lead they would never relinquish.
More on penalties, Scott Evans to Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle:
"We wanted to take advantage of their mistakes and if they want to take stupid penalties, we want to make them pay for it."
Evans currently leads the league with 24 goals, eleven of which were power play markers. Evans has a five goal advantage over Dan Carey (Colorado) and Jeff Zywicki (San Jose) for the league lead.
The Colorado Mammoth dropped the Edmonton Rush 16-7 on Saturday, their largest margin of victory all season. Five of Colorado's six wins this season were won by four or more points. The most compelling story for the Mammoth however may have been the return of transition player Nick Carlson, who saw his first significant action since completing a grueling rehabilitation regiment following knee surgery.
Before 17,804 at the Pepsi Center, Carlson scored Colorado's ninth goal of the game on a breakaway. A goal Theresa Smith of the Denver Post called, "A goal months in the making."
"Months and months and months," Carlson described his comeback from knee surgery to the Denver Post. A rehab that began with 60 days on crutches, followed by 5:30 a.m. physical therapy sessions three days a week.
"It was hard work and real painful," Carlson told the Denver Post. "I was physically limited before. The time off helped."
Also, forward Jordan Cornfield, playing team that cut him before season and he scored two goals in the game. It was his best single-game out put of the three he's played in this season.
The Calgary Roughnecks captured their fourth straight win and avenged their only loss of the season with a 15-11 win over the San Jose Stealth on Saturday. The Roughnecks scored three short-handed goals in the contest, something they have been successful at all season.
Currently Calgary has 12 short-handed goals; no other team in the league has more than seven. Five Roughnecks players have scored at least two short-handed goals, while four NLL teams have two or less short-handed goals this season.
The NLL record for short-handed goals in a season is 15 and Calgary has 11 games left to attempt to break the record.
"It's seems to be our MO these days," Roughnecks general manager Kurt Silcott told the Calgary Sun. "We're taking a lot of penalties but when you're scoring on the short man, it's acceptable.
"We're on a heck of a pace. We had some nice ones and I hope it keeps going. We don't want to be in the penalty box that much but the boys respond when we do get in there."
The Arizona Sting captured their fourth straight victory with a 16-15 win over the New York Titans. Arizona's fourth consecutive victory establishes a new team record while forward Dan Dawson matched his own career high with 9 points in the contest (6G-3A).
The Titans chose to go with Matt Vinc in goal and he played the entire game. It was the first full game of his career and he stopped 34 of 50 shots faced.
The Minnesota Swarm dropped the Portland LumberJax 11-8 on Friday, handing Portland their fourth straight loss. The LumberJax had opened the season with two straight wins and were on an eight game regular season winning streak. But since losing to Arizona 11-4 on January 19th, the LumberJax have now lost four consecutive.
"We're on the brink of having to win every game down the stretch," Jax head coach Derek Keenan told Paul Buker of the Oregonian.
After an off week this coming weekend, Portland next plays Colorado (6-1) and Rochester (5-2), the teams who are currently holding the two best records in the league.
With a goal by Mark Miyashita in the third quarter on Friday, the Minnesota Swarm now have had thirteen different players score at least one goal this season. The Swarm have also had ten different players score at least four goals and no player has scored more than eight.
