2006 Jr."A" Draft
Wednesday January 18, 2006
TORONTO -- The Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) today announced the results of the 2006 OLA Junior “A” Draft.
Cameron Mann of Hamilton, Ontario was selected first overall by the Burlington Chiefs. Mann was a member of Hamilton Midget team that won bronze last year at the 2005 OLA Midget “A” Provincials. He scored 14 points (7g, 7a) in 8 games and his play during the Provincials earned him a spot on the OLA/Toronto Rock Midget “A” All-Star Team. Mann now joins Burlington along side sixth overall pick Alex Crepinsek of Oakville.
Other early first round selections were Adam Jones of Owen Sound picked second and Chad McCabe of London picked fourth both by Mississauga; Brandon Noble of Barrie picked third overall by Orillia and Carter Bender of Caledon picked fifth by the Toronto Beaches.
According to OLA Junior “A” Commissioner Dean McLeod, the Junior “A” Draft was initiated in 1976 as a vehicle to provide the top graduating, non-affiliated Midget players with an opportunity to showcase their skills at the junior “A” level. “Additionally,” says McLeod, “the draft helps create parity among league members by establishing selections based on reverse order of finish from the previous season. A significant number of draft choices over the years have participated in NLL, Mann Cup and Minto Cup championships.”
At the 2006 OLA Junior “A” Draft, three teams had four picks. Burlington and Mississauga both had three choices in the first round along with a fourth selection to make in the second round. Ottawa Titans finished eighth overall in their first season and was the third team to have four selections; all of them in the second round. Six Nations, Orangeville, Kitchener and Peterborough did not make any picks in the draft.
In all, twenty two players were selected. A complete Draft list follows.
