A’s MAKE BIG GAINS, CANDY SELECTED 
FIRST AT 2001 OLA MAJOR DRAFT
By Ron MacSpadyen: MEDIA RELEASE Sunday January 28, 2001 TORONTO -- The Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) today announced the results of the 2001 OLA Major Draft. Drew Candy of London, Ontario was selected first overall by the Akwesasne Thunder. Candy played with the Mississauga Tomahawks of the OLA Junior “A” League during the 2000 season and had the opportunity to participate with the Thunder in three games last year. “It’s an honour to picked first overall and I look forward to playing with Akwesasne in the OLA Major Series” he said after the Draft. Candy is currently with the Toronto Rock, a second round pick (eighteenth overall) at the 2001 NLL Draft. After the Six Nations Chiefs selected Burlington sniper Marc Landriault second overall, the St. Catharines Athletics owned the next four picks as A’s General Manager Bill Lefeuvre continues to build via the Draft. St.Catharines selected Ryan Crowthers of Peterborough third; Jamie McKeracher of Mississauga fourth; Scott Stewart of Burlington fifth and Pat Merrill of Orangeville sixth. The Mann Cup champion Brooklin Redmen picked Kelly Sullivan of Peterborough to end the first round. In total, six overage Juniors from the 2000 OLA Junior “A” champion Orangeville Northmen were drafted: Merrill, Brandon Miller (ninth), Carter Livingstone (tenth), Stu Gordon (eleventh), Kevin Howard (sixteenth) and Calgary, Alberta product Jon Harasym (seventeenth). Additionally, three players were selected from the OLA Junior “B” League: Shawn Zettle of Sarnia; Bryden Denyes of Nepean and Joel Johnson of the Green Gaels. In all, nineteen players were selected in three rounds. A complete Draft list follows.
