To All Readers of the Can-Am File Disclaimer ---------- From Ken Sandy Sept 16/98 First of all, the "President's Cup website" is on the Unofficial OLA page, meaning that the site for the Presidents Cup was unofficial as well. I believe that the webmaster of the CLA site (www.lacrosse.ca) misinterpreted my request for Presidents Cup information earlier in the summer for my Can-Am file, which is on the unofficial OLA page, and linked my file as "the Presidents Cup Website". I thoroughly appreciated his help with my search for information. I contribute to the Can-Am file only on a part time basis and as such, contributed only the scores and a little overview of the tournament. So, in fact, there never was an official President's Cup website. I am in no way affiliated with the President's Cup organization committee or the Can-Am Lacrosse Association. I played in the Can-Am for two years and I wanted to see a little bit of coverage for the league so I contacted Glen Dundas and he agreed to set up a separate file for the Can-Am. Throughout the entire summer my reports (on regular season games) were brief as I had my own team (Six Nations Chiefs) to play for as well (not to mention other commitments) and didn't get to see much more than two or three games a month. Therefore I did not have the time to contribute to the Can-Am project as much as I would have liked. I did the President's Cup scores: 1. because they related to the Can-Am league; and 2. because I wanted to inform people. Sorry to disappoint you but the Can-Am file was never intended to be an official source of information for the President's Cup (I didn't even get to attend all of the games myself) or the Can-Am Lacrosse Association. So basically all that I did was e-mail information to Glen D. so he could post it on the "unofficial" Can-Am page. The CLA website has the phone number and address for the official contact for the President's Cup. Again, I'm sorry that I couldn't be of any more help to you. Sincerely, Ken Sandy ====<#), If you have any questions feel free to contact me by e-mail: k_a_sandy@hotmail.com

Ladner Pioneers Win It From Ken Sandy Sept 8/98 1998 President's Cup Champions: Ladner Pioneers!!! -------------------------------------------------- Niagara Falls, Ont.- The Ladner Pioneers captured the 1998 Senior B crown here on Labour Day by downing the Can-Am champion Newtown Golden Eagles by a score of 11-6. Newtown held a brief one goal lead at the midpoint of the first period only to be erased by three Pioneer goals. Ladner then went on to dominate the game by capitalizing on their chances against Golden Eagles goalie Clint Jones (replaced by Greg Lay late in the second) and playing a tight smothering defense. Pioneer goaltender Rob(?) Cooke played an excellent game turning aside many outside shots from the 'Eagles. The bronze medal game was won by the host team as the Tuscarora Thunderhawks defeated the Iroquois Lacrosse Association champions Kahnawake Mohawks by a score of 11-10 in overtime. The following are the scores from the weekend: Friday, September 4 - Tuscarora 9 over Edmonton 8 Newtown 12 over Kahnawake 11 Ladner 11 over Edmonton 2 Newtown 11 over Tuscarora 10 (players of the game were Barry Powless of Tuscarora and Mike Stevens for Newtown) Saturday, September 5 - Tuscarora 10 over Ladner 5 (player of the game for Tuscarora was Bryan Miller) Kahnawake 11 over Edmonton 5 Ladner 16 over Newtown 4 Kahnawake 9 over Tuscarora 8 Sunday, September 6 - Semifinals 1st place Ladner 11 over 4th place Tuscarora 4 2nd place Newtown 11 over 3rd place Kahnawake 6 Monday, September 7 - Bronze Medal Game Tuscarora 11 over Kahnawake 10 o/t Gold Medal Game Ladner 11 over Newtown 6 Notes: The Tuscarora Thunderhawks were the only team to defeat the Ladner Pioneers in the tournament in a game where 'Hawks goalie Dale Henry played an outstanding game...Ladner finished first with a 3-1 record, Newtown second (same record), Tuscarora third and Kahnawake fourth (both teams finished the round robin 2-2), Edmonton Miners failed to record a single victory this weekend but played very strong in all of their games...Bobby Delaronde of the Kahnawake Mohawks finished the round robin in first place on the leading scorers list...Tuscarora Thunderhawks called up Keith White of Pinewoods for the tournament as well as Hagersville Warriors Todd Thomas and Mike Shaw...Thomas was used mainly on defense and Shaw mainly on offense, he also played the crease on the power play...during a stoppage in play of Thursday's evening game the arena DJ played the theme from "M*A*S*H" (I wish they had used an allstar DJ for the games)...later... ===<*)
President's Cup Update ---------------------- Thursday, September 3, 1998 Game one of the President's Cup in Niagara Falls, Ontario saw the Ladner Pioneers (B.C) defeat the Kahnawake Mohawks (ILA) by a score of 14 - 8. The Molson Player of the Game was Ladner's Kyle Goundrey. This game took almost three hours to play, as the referees conferred on almost every call and numerous minor scuffles took place. The second game was a fast paced affair as the Newtown N.Y. Golden Eagles (Can-Am) defeated the Edmonton Miners (Alberta) 12 to 8. Newtown's Molson Player of the Game was goaltender Clint Jones. Jones played a stellar game for the Can-Am champs, turning aside many excellent scoring chances (many of which were against the Miners' power play) as Newtown ran into some penalty troubles after building an 8 to 3 lead.

Newtown Headed For The President's Cup Kahnawake Wins ILA Aug 25/98 by Ken Sandy The Newtown N.Y. Golden Eagles defeated the Hagersville Warriors four games straight for the right to represent the Can-Am Lacrosse Association in the President's Cup to be held in Niagara Falls on Labour Day Weekend. The (unofficial) scores for the series are as follows: Game One (in Hagersville) - Newtown 13 Hagersville 7 Game Two (in Newtown)- Newtown 23 Hagersville 7 Game Three (in Newtown)- Newtown 30 Hagersville 10 Game Four (in Hagersville)- Newtown 18 Hagersville 11 Game one was originally held in Newtown but had to be cancelled with less than a minute to play in the second period when referee Terry Morneau could not continue as a result of an injury suffered while attempting to break up a fight. Newtown was leading at that point but, as the game was cancelled, the entire game had to be replayed the following night in Hagersville. Newtown will make their first President's Cup appearance since the games were held at the Brantford Civic Centre in 1992. The host team that year was the Brantford Wolves (then Can-Am, now Ohsweken Wolves, OLA Major). That year the Cup was won by the Fergus Thistles, defeating the Nanaimo Timbermen in a thrilling overtime game. The Golden Eagles should be able to make a serious impact at the games this year with their youthful, fast team. Clint Jones handles the bulk of their goaltending duties. The Tuscarora Thunderhawks will be in the tournament as the host team. The ILA representatives will be the Kahnawake Mohawks who defeated the Onondaga Athletic Club four games straight. Scores for that series are as follows: Game One (at Kahnawake) Kahnawake 13 Onondaga 7 Game Two (at Kahnawake) Kahnawake 11 Onondaga 7 Game Three (at Onondaga) Kahnawake 12 Onondaga 11 Game Four (at Onondaga) Kahnawake 12 Onondaga 9 The other teams in the tournament will include the Edmonton Miners and the BC champions (I do not have the results yet from the final series between the Ladner Pioneers and the Vernon Tigers). The President's Cup schedule will be posted shortly. In the words of one of the Kahnawake Mohawks, "Niagara Falls, HERE WE COME!!!!!!!"
Aug 3/98 Warriors Advance To The Finals ------------------------------ By Ken Sandy After being defeated by the Tuscarora Thunderhawks Saturday night 22-3, the Hagersville Warriors bounced back to win the league semi-final series in game 7. The final score on Sunday afternoon was Hagersville 9, Tuscarora 7. The Warriors now face the Newtown, N.Y. Golden Eagles, who finished the regular season in first place. The seven game league championship series promise to be a great one. Game 1 of the series will take place on Friday, August 7 at the Gil Lay Memorial Arena in Newtown, which is approximately 50 km west of Buffalo. I will post the full schedule for the series as soon as I get it.
Can-Am Playoffs Aug 1/98 Thunderhawks Demolish Warriors ------------------------------ By Ken Sandy The Tuscarora, N.Y. Thunderhawks soundly thrashed the Hagersville Warriors on Friday, July 31 at the Hagersville Arena. The final tally was Tuscarora 22, Hagersville 5. The T-Hawks totally dominated their counterparts on this night to bring this best of seven league semifinal series to three games to two in favour of the Warriors. The Thunderhawks opened the scoring and never looked back. Thunderhawks sniper Bryan Miller was the victim of a Scott Harris hit four minutes into the contest which sent him out of the game on a stretcher. He appears to be O.K. though as I saw him return to the rink before the game was over. Tuscarora took advantage of the Warriors early penalty troubles scoring four power play goals in the first stanza and exiting the period with an 8 to 1 lead. The T-Hawks' tight defense allowed very few genuine scoring opportunities which resulted in a lot of Hagersville shots being sent wide of the net. The Thunderhawks veteran powerplay unit showed much poise as they dismantled the Warriors man short squad. Donnie Henry was the top goalscorer for the game, earning five goals, most of which came from long grasscutters. Barry Powless scored four goals for the T-Hawks, while Bear Henry added three. Gary "Bro" Smoke, who was cut by the Warriors early in the season, also added two of his own. Kervin John and Bryan Miller added singles. #33 for the T-Hawks (no programs and a bad P.A. system) scored three goals, all on the powerplay. Warriors goals were scored by Jason Johnson (2), Mike Shaw (2) and Carlton Hill. Game six in the series goes on at the Niagara Falls Memorial tonight (Sat. Aug. 1) at 8:00 p.m. The seventh game, if necessary (if last night was any indication, it will be very necessary), will take place on Sunday afternoon at the Hagersville Arena at 2:00. In the other semifinal series, the regular season top team Newtown (N.Y.) Golden Eagles lead the Pinewoods (N.Y.) Athletic Club three games to one. Game five of that series was also last night but I don't have the results yet.
President's Cup Update: Countdown to Niagara Falls July 30/98 By Ken Sandy The time is fast approaching for the most exciting tournament in lacrosse. Alberta will be represented by the Edmonton Miners. Edmonton defeated Red Deer two games to zip in their first round of playoffs. The Miners then went on to defeat the Calgary Mountaineers in the league finals three games straight. The scores in that series were; game 1: 12-8, game 2: 4-2 and game three: 12-8. The WCSL (lower mainland) champs will playoff against the winner of the series between the Prince George league champs and the Okanagan league champs for the right to represent British Columbia. I will post more info as it becomes available.
Hagersville, Tuscarora Split Weekend Games July 29/98 by Ken Sandy On Friday, July 24 the Tuscarora rolled into the Hagersville Arena to face the Warriors in this Can-Am semi-final seven game series. The Warriors were up two games to none so the T-hawks had to perform in order to get back into this series. The Hagersille boys were ready for this match, however, dominating from start to finish. The Warriors found the twine behind Thunderhawks goaltender Dale Henry early and often, leading three to nothing before the game was five minutes old. Tuscarora just couldn't seem to get things going all night as the Warriors took a three game lead in the series. Final score, 21-7. Jason Johnson (former pick of the Syracuse Smash) picked up five goals on the night. Full credit goes out to Hagersville netminder Wayne Cavanaugh, who made some excellent stick saves sliding across the crease. Hagersville's goals were scored by a number of players; Scott Harris, Derek Campbell, Ben Henry, Mike Shaw, Joel Skye (who played for the Ohsweken Wolves last year)and Dave Johnson. I'll get the official scorers for the game. Saturday night, however, was a totally different story. With the Thunderhawks trying to keep from getting swept, Hagersville succumbed to overconfidence and the T-hawks did an excellent job of capitalizing on the younger Hagersville' squad's mistakes. Tuscarora exited the first period on the winning side of a 6-1 score. This game was a complete reversal of the previous night's contest. Tuscarora veteran Robert "Bear" Henry (who played a couple of seasons with the Buffalo Bandits) is the leader of this veteran team, setting up three goals and scoring two others. Bryan Miller scored four as well as Donnie Henry. Kervin John added two of his own. On this night, Hagersville couldn't get the ball rolling and allowed the T-Hawks to pentrate their defense, leaving goaltenders Phil Skye and Wayne Cavanaugh all alone too many times. Rushton Skye was the one bright spot for the Warriors, scoring three goals. Game five goes Friday, July 31 at 8:30 in Hagersville.
President's Cup Update I have just been informed that the Maritime Senior League will not be sending a team to the President's Cup to be held in Niagara Falls, Ont on Labour Day weekend. The OLA also will not allow its last place team to participate in the tournament as well. As far as I know, the tournament will have teams from BC, Alberta, Quebec and two from the host league, Can-Am. Apparently, the Can-Am will be sending their two league finalists to the tournament. If anyone has any information on the President's Cup or the ILA playoffs please e-mail me k_a_sandy@hotmail.com

The league only plays on weekends League Semi-Finals:Warriors Leading The T-Hawks July 22, 1998 By Ken Sandy The #2 Hagersville Warriors are leading the #3 Tuscarora Thunderhawks in their best of seven semifinal series two games to zip. Game one was in Hagersville on Fri. Jul . 17 with Hagersville coming out on top by a score of 13-10. Game two took place Sun. Jul. 19 and the Warriors won 17-12. Game three of the series will be played at the Hagersville Arena on Friday, July 24 at 8:30 p.m. I will be attending this game so a full report will be posted. Game four is slated for Sunday the 26th at the Niagara Falls Memorial Arena.
Sunday, June 14 Saw Hagersville defeat Pinewoods 12-11. Hagersville was winning 8-2 after the first but their first string tender charged a Pinewoods player who was on a breakaway and got himself thrown out of the game. Hagersville then had to go with Phil Skye in the pipes. Pinewoods took advantage of the rookie and were able to tie the game by the midpoint of the third. Hagersille got the winning goal around the five minute mark with a long bounce shot by Leroy Henry. The Warriors (Hagersville) defeated Tuscarora Friday night.
On Saturday June 20 the Hagersville Warriors travelled to the Gil Lay Memorial Arena to face Pinewoods. The Warriors came out on the losing end of this battle by a score of 15-8. Eight different players accounted for the Warriors goals. They were; Steve Martin, Mike Gatt, Carlton Hill, Rushton Skye, Cam Johnson, Travis Hill, Bruce Longboat and Todd Thomas. The Warriors will travel to the Niagara Falls Memorial Arena to face the Tuscarora Thunderhawks on Friday, June 26 for an 8:00 game. Hagersville then faces off against the league leading Newtown Golden Eagles at the Gil Lay Arena in Newtown on Saturday night.
The Can-Am league is hosting President's Cup '98 Labour Day weekend, in Niagara Falls, Ont (Tuscarora's home arena, even though they are comprised mostly of players from the Tuscarora reservation ).The tournament format is as yet undetermined because the league wants the teams who finish #1 and #2 to participate regardless of the fact that it is the Tuscarora team that is supposed to be hosting. The other teams will be the BC Sr B. champs, the Iroquois Lacrosse Association (I.L.A., where the Akwesasne Thunder graduated from after winning two of the last three President's Cups), Alberta (which is usually the Edmonton Miners) and Quebec (a team from Valleyfield which plays in the ILA, but gets an automatic berth in the Cup because they are from Quebec). As of yet I don't know if the Maritimes is sending a team (they usually do when the tourney is fairly close to home) or if any of the other provinces will participate.
Since 1994, the Presiden't Cup has been won by either the Can-Am or the I.L.A. Gold Medal Games 1994 Tuscarora, CANAM defeated Burnaby, BC, in Hamilton Ont (Hamilton Tigers, Can-Am, played host. This franchise moved following '94 to become the Hagersville Warriors) 1995 Akwesasne Thunder, ILA deafeated Burnaby, B.C., in Prince George BC. 1996 Ohsweken Wolves, CANAM defeated Akwesasne Thunder, ILA (this tournament also saw the Wolves crush Fergus 16-5, knocking them out of the medal round, in the OLA's last Cup appearance), in Akwesasne 1997 Akwesasne Thunder, ILA defeated Ohsweken Wolves, CANAM, in Ladner BC.
